Dear Diary,
Mom decided that part of school today would be researching growing zones. Apparently, she’s seriously considering growing stuff.
Just between you and me, there’s a plant in the living room that Mom keeps telling us is really, truly alive.
It’s dead.
And we are supposed to be growing stuff to eat!
So, we were supposed to find out what zone we are in and what types of things can grow there.

Assignment: This is actually a two-part assignment.
This first part is finding what hardiness zone your farm is in, and conveniently enough, you can go here to find that. Maybe you can even get a copy of the map to put into your journal entry.
The second part is to determine what plants would grow there. You could come up with a huge list! Or maybe, a rather small-ish one. Don’t just pick things you like; remember, your Mother is a big part of this story and Moms are notorious for making you eat, or grow, things you may not like.
Oh, and you might want to consider things such as fruit trees, bushes and flowers. Other trees that you may find on the farm too, like ash or cedar.
Remember, you may have to adjust the story starter. For instance, your Mom may have a “green thumb” and have a great number of healthy plants about your house.
